SOLAR AVIATION LIGHTING

 

Days of Autonomy:

This is the number of days where no power generation is possible due to clouds or rain despite the fact that you continue to consume energy. Please note that even on days of complete clouds, a solar powered lighting system still gets some battery charging during daylight hours. Our solar power calculation is based on published annual temperature and solar radiation data. The battery is designed for solar power systems to withstand deep discharge cycling.

The solar power controller is solid-state, encapsulated and mounted in an outdoor NEMA 4X enclosure. The controller does not, and should not, have a low battery cutoff as the lights must stay ON despite marginal conditions. We also add a 30% safety margin. The manufacturer of the lighting should be specified to be an FAA certified manufacturing facility. Beware of competitors’ quotes by distributors and others who simply buy lights and separate solar power materials. They may use lights that do not accurately state the power consumption and do not allow sufficient safety factors. You want these lights to work during the darkest month of the year.

SOLAR POWERED HELIPORT LIGHTING

Point Lighting supplies solar powered heliport lighting systems that meet the same standards as a hard-wired AC powered system. Competitors’ lights with little onboard solar arrays are too dim and just don’t work consistently. Lights with little antennas end up with some lights on and some off. We prefer to use one radio controller with all the lights connected and powered by one central solar array and controller. This permits multiple timed aircraft operations per night while maintaining the capacity.

SOLAR POWERED OBSTRUCTION LIGHTING

Point Lighting has decades of experience supplying aviation obstruction lighting systems including controls. Most full systems are not suitable for solar power because of the high load requirements. These non-solar projects include all white beacon systems. Solar obstruction lighting is best suited individual red lights and small red systems such as a tower less than 350-ft tall.
